Episode 14: Question of the Month with Jennifer Mastor
For this first “Question of the Month” episode in 2021, my guest Jennifer Mastor of Mastor Recruiting and Consulting and I answer the question, “How do I identify my marketable skills when I’m looking to switch industries or roles or if I’m having trouble landing my next job?”
We also discuss Jennifer’s career path and lessons learned, her Top 10 list of skills to speak to and have on résumés as applicable, and a straightforward process to leave a job graciously. As usual, I conclude the show with the weekly “Reignition Recommendation” career tip.

[02:26] Lisa asks Jennifer to share her career path. Jennifer – first career in hospitality industry – recruiter working on commission.
[04:07] What’s a lesson or two you’ve learned? Jennifer – intimidated by CEOs and other leaders; learned to not put anybody on a pedestal – allowed her to find her voice.
[05:35] What else was particularly helpful for you as you got you through times of change and different transitions you made? Jennifer – just did it; resources not as prevalent then as they are today; uses word “change” positively and embraced it.
[07:06] How did you look at change in a way that allowed you to embrace it fully? Jennifer – background in sports as a professional athlete taught her to not take “no” for an answer and trust in herself.
[08:03] Tell more about experience as a professional athlete. Jennifer – three years professionally playing tennis; teaches you a lot and to constantly move.
[08:46] Who were some coaches important to you at that time? Jennifer – high school tennis coach; junior college tennis coach; taught how to stay young at heart and stay aggressive.
[09:39] What was that transition like when you stopped playing tennis regularly? Jennifer – heartbreak, depression, not knowing what to do with time; became junior varsity men’s tennis coach in college.
[13:30] “Question of the Month” – Identifying skills? Jennifer – what you have should be used regardless of your job; marketable skills – there are 10 truly marketable skills – shares her list; it’s about how you use them and share the value of them.
[16:48] How to gain confidence? Jennifer – every person has confidence – at times can’t find it or don’t know how to let it out or access it; give adjectives that describe who you are.
[21:00] Recommendations to decide whether to stay or go? Jennifer – all depends on situation; look at yourself in the mirror and cringe about your job, you leave; question is when.
[22:19] Good way to quit a job? Jennifer – keep it simple, short, positive, thank them.
