Episode 41: Lisa Answers Listeners’ Questions
This is the next episode of “Ask Lisa,” the focus of the show every second week of the month, when I answer listeners’ career transition questions.
The topics Include leaving your current work to start a business, how to handle negativity from friends after announcing a career change, tips for informational interviews, and how to get more traction with your résumé in job search.
KKNW producer Eric and I also exchange reactions to these questions and I share the week’s “Reignition Recommendation,” a tip of the week for mid-late career transitions regardless of your age.

[00:46] It’s the second week of the month, so that means it’s time for our “Ask Lisa” episode. I’ll be answering listeners’ career transition questions by providing a few tips.
[03:06] First question from Brenda – considering leaving current work to start a business – what should I do when I’m not positive it’s the right move for me?
[03:39] Have to know your “why” behind it; means dealing with a lot of uncertainty; identify fears that could come into play – failure, success; need to be true to who you are.
[06:24] Next question from Lynnette – been getting negative comments re: leaving job to get a master’s in education degree – how can I handle this and not let it bother me too much?
[06:56] Push past the naysayers – focus on the future and push through any fear; it’s like holding up a mirror, reflecting what they’re own lives are like based on their own choices and fears.

[16:20] Next question from Tim – what are some tips for doing informational interviews?
[16:40] Research the person; have a specific goal; prepare a few questions in advance; explain upfront why you’re conducting the interview; ask for advice, information, and referrals for additional introductions; send a thank-you note.
[20:00] Next question from Ashley – how can I get my résumé past the application systems to get more responses?
[20:35] Use jobscan.co to upload your résumé and job descriptions to see how well they match; use a word cloud tool like Wordclouds.com or WordArt to upload job descriptions and see keywords that you can include; be sure you have strong branding and accomplishment statements.
[25:09] Reminder for listeners to email or leave a voicemail at 360-436-6496 to ask their career transition questions for the second week of August.
[25:40] “Reignition Recommendation” for the week – choose an activity that can be a form of therapy.
