Episode 42: Felicia Shanken Talks Women’s Entrepreneurship

As the CEO and Founder of the Philadelphia Women’s Network Connection and PWNC Foundation, Inc., Felicia Shanken provided great insights in this episode and addressed ways we can all support women- and minority-owned businesses.

She also shed some light on the experiences of entrepreneurs during the pandemic and her take on key attributes or characteristics it’s important to have as a woman business owner.

Felicia also shares about her career journey and lessons learned, including making sure you have enough money coming in before starting a business and pursuing your dream. The show concludes with the weekly “Reignition Recommendation” career tip.

[04:23] Lisa asks Felicia to share her career path – had been in medicine for over 25 years; always had a side business; decided to pursue entrepreneurship four years ago.

[06:09] When you were in that process of transitioning from your full-time corporate career into entrepreneurship, what were some of the things you wanted to make sure were in place before you took the leap? Felicia – took a leap of faith – had a bit of a cushion.

[07:09] What’s a lesson or two you that stands out to you? Felicia – wait until making similar salary in business before leaping; dream was bigger than being unhappy.

[08:01] What is it that really excites you and energizes you about being a business owner? Felicia – helping someone and doing my purpose.

[08:33] Did you do a lot of work around vision and purpose as you were crafting your business? Felicia – rely heavily on faith; vision of PWNC came at a Panera Bread; wanted to do something for men and women to come and have fun and incorporate great content into your business.

[10:01] What was particularly helpful that got you through times of change and transition? Felicia – biggest supporter is husband; over 1500 small businesswomen in community.

[11:02] When you have days when you’re a bit down, what are some things you do to stay positive? Felicia – rescue dog will come over and keeps me grounded; get back to my “why.”

[16:04] What inspired you to focus on women entrepreneurs and business professionals for your work and foundation? Felicia – have a love for women; women united can get so much done.

[16:56] How has the pandemic impacted women-owned businesses based on your experience supporting them with networking and exposure? Felicia – been hard; many had to close businesses; got a small loan for the foundation – had to stretch; did allow for going global.

[19:35] As someone who’s been recognized multiple times for being a top woman of influence, what are 2-3 key attributes or characteristics women in particular need to have to be a successful entrepreneur? Felicia – thick skin; can’t take anything personally; nature of really caring – compassion.

[22:08] Beyond buying their products and services, what are additional ways we can support women business owners specifically? Felicia – word of mouth; share posts; promote each other.

[22:55] What are you seeing in terms of how women entrepreneurs are marketing themselves? Felicia – a lot have transitioned to TikTok and Twitter; YouTube; have to constantly be getting the word out.
